Rinjani volcano on
the island of Lombok rises to 3,726 metres (12,224 ft),
second in height among Indonesian, attracting thousand of
trekkers and climbers annually. The Rinjani caldera forming
eruption is thought to have occurred in the 13th century.
Eruption rate, eruption sites, eruption type and magma
composition have changed during the last 10,000 years before
the caldera forming eruption. The eruptions of 1994 and 1995
have presented at Gunung Baru (or 'New Mountain' -
approximately 2300 meter above sea level) in the center of
this caldera and lava flows from subsequent eruptions have
entered the lake. This cone has since been renamed Gunung
Barujari (or 'Gunung Baru Jari' in Indonesia).
Much of the island is still covered by natural rain forest
and jungles, making Lombok ideal for ecotourism and
adventure tours. There are a number of spectacular
waterfalls on the island which provide lovely trekking
opportunities, whether traveling independently or as part
of a tour. Sendang Gile on the slope of Mt. Rinjani in the
norht is an easily accessible waterfall in a stunning jungle
setting and popular with visitors. The awesome Benang Stokel
and Benang Kelambu waterfalls, in central Lombok are located
within a short trek of each other.
